The Potato Story


This week we have continued the topic of 'healthy eating' and have been learning all about food provenance through McCain's campaign 'The Potato Story.' It's a very interesting campaign which highlights the shocking truth about how little the nation's children know when it comes to food provenance.

Taking the form of a purpose built, unbranded double decker bus, 'The Potato Story' aims to plug kids' food knowledge gap as a survey shows that one in 10 children aged 7-11 year olds think chickens lay potatoes.

Dr Richard Woolfston, a prominent child psychologist, says: "Lack of understanding of food and a misunderstanding of what constitutes 'healthy food' may have a serious impact on the eating habits of children in the future.

"Food provenance is a big part of this, as it's very important that children learn where their food comes from in order for them to develop healthy eating habits from an early age."

Shocked by these findings, my goal from now on is to explain as much as possible exactly where certain foods come from. I'm pretty sure Master Craftiness has a good range of knowledge on this topic, but it was interesting to watch him making this video:

For example, you can find advice on how to grow your own potatoes, or get your children cooking with the fun and healthy potato based recipes. You could even pitch your knowledge against your child's by doing the multiple choice quiz games and comparing your scores!
