Father's Day gift idea - day 6 - All Star Karate for Wii by THQ

All Star Karate by THQ is great for Dad’s who want some time by themselves to chill out. Alternatively it is great way for dads to bond with their teen kids as this will leave them able to challenge players to punch, kick and chop their way through the game with play features based on real karate moves. With optional Wii MotionPlus™ compatibility, the game offers a true full-body experience by allowing players to experience the life of a karate trainee who is under the guidance of a wise, but humorous sensei, and is on the path toward attaining a black belt, the highest achievement level in karate.
In All Star Karate, players will follow the life of a young, martial arts novice whose noble attempt to save an elderly man from a pack of ninjas brings him face-to-face with a true karate master. The sensei, a cantankerous old-timer, offers his services and teaches his new protégé the proper techniques and disciplines of karate and guides him toward achieving the black belt. In single-player, Career mode, players will execute and master various karate moves utilizing the Wii Remote™ and Nunchuk, or two Wii Remotes, in order to attain the seven different colored belts or achievement levels in karate, including the black belt. Additionally, players can show off their hand, kicking and blocking techniques by sparring with a friend in Challenge mode or by creating their own move sequences to perform with the Kata Editor.

Dad says: I loved this game as a Father’s Day gift idea as it’s perfect for when I come home from a long stressful day at work and need to unwind. I never realised how karate releases the stress of the day. It was particularly enjoyable to play the mini-games with my son who had us chopping and punching away. It’s also a relatively good way to burn off those extra calories as all that chopping action soon has you breaking in to a sweat.

Father's Day gift idea - day 5 - Table Football from www.brightminds.co.uk

Next it was time for some father/son bonding time and so we hunted down some games that would be suitable for Dads to really bond with their children over. We suggest:

Table Football (£29.99) from www.brightminds.co.uk

This is a fantastic table top game which really encourages interaction between parent and child. These days so many things are computer based that we have lost the pleasure that simple games bring. If you don’t have a games room or basement you can still enjoy this table-top. It’s lightweight and easy to move and is great for inducing some heated action. Whoops and cheers will soon be heard from both players as the game gets in full swing. And only a small amount of assembly is required to get this up and running.

Dad says: Not only was this is a brilliant gift idea for me and my son games-wise, it also proves a good opportunity to get him in to real- life football. Also a timely gift considering we have the World Cup coming up shortly. I was particularly pleased with the quality of this item and I can see this becoming a family heirloom. My son and I have had so much fun with this, that my son actually commented that he preferred this to computer games. Which was a huge compliment coming from a computer addict. Seriously though, the whole family can get involved in this. We even had Mum playing the winner out of the two of us. This game has provided us with hours of quality ‘family time.’ And so for that quality alone, I would really recommend this as a Father’s Day gift. It even allows dads to revert back to their childhood, which is a pleasurable thing to be able to do at any age. Brilliant!!”

Father's Day Gift Idea - Day 4 - Personalised Photo Frame from www.gettingpersonal.co.uk

We found it hard to narrow it down to one thing on the www.gettingpersonal.co.uk website. In fact the Getting Personal website is fast becoming one of our favourite websites because of the fact that it locates such unique and personal gift ideas. There is something for everyone on this website. And so we looked through Dear Dad Journals, Personalised Dream Car Notebooks, Name a Star Gift Boxes, personalised ‘SuperDad’ calendars, ‘I Love My Daddy’ Frames and Mugs and personalised beer glasses before we settled on a personalised photo frame.

The Personalised Photo Frame costs £16.95 and is worth every single penny. We personalised it with a Father’s Day message and were astounded with the quality of the engraving of the words on the wood when it came. The frame is simple but effective and looks great in any kind of home decor. So what did Dad think?

Dad says: “I was actually overcome with emotion when I was given this. Such a lovely message printed on the frame, accompanied with a picture of my two children. What more could a man ask for? If I was to only receive this gift alone it would completely make my day. I loved the fact that my family had gone to the trouble of ordering a personalised gift which had required thought put in to the message. This will take pride of place in our household and not only in our household but in my heart. A fantastic gift idea! I’m one pleased dad!”

Father's Day gift idea - Day 3 - Proporta iPhone covers

Proporta iPhone Covers: If there is one thing that Dad loves it’s his iPhone. Protecting it is a huge issue for our for him at the moment as his last phone got ruined when it fell out of his hands. If that happened to his beloved iPhone he would be in despair. So we set about looking for some protection. After much trawling of the Internet we found something that would not only offer extreme protection, was highly attractive but eco-friendly too! It was by a company name Proporta. These really appealed to us because of the sustainable bamboo, recycled leather and hessian.

We got Dad to test out the Recycled Leather Case with Bamboo Screen Protection and Recycled Hessian Pouch. The recycled leather case is made from 100% recycled leather with a natural Hessian lining. It contains a seriously smart protective sheet of hard bamboo (which also doubles up as packaging), keeping your device safe and sound and you in Mother Nature’s good books. The hessian pouch is handcrafted from Hessian with natural cotton stitching; the Proporta Smart Hessian Pouch boasts a hidden cork lining to protect your device and an exterior ‘flash’ design made from recycled leather. We were interested to learn that Bamboo was chosen due to the fact that it is almost 20% stronger than steel. It is also a rather quick grower and can shoot up to 60 cms in one day. An amazing material - it’s natural, sustainable and, as it grows, it actually removes carbon from the atmosphere, locking it away. Once bamboo reaches maturity it has to be harvested to encourage more to grow and Proporta only uses sustainable bamboo which is ready to be harvested. So perfect for any dads who are concerned about the environment!

Dad says: I was touched by this gift as a lot of thought had gone in to it. I didn’t even realise that my family cared so much about my personal belongings but obviously they do. I was very impressed with the green credentials and the quality of protection that these covers offered. Even more impressive was the fact they had managed to combine good looks with eco-friendly materials. I can now sleep safe in the knowledge that my iphone has the utmost protection. I liked the fact that the screens were so well protected. A big thumbs up from me!”

Father's Day Gift idea - Day 2 - Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua eau de toilette from www.theperfumeshop.com

After Dad’s belly is full, why not get the kids to lay out his clothes for him on the bed along with another secret gift 'Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua' Eau de Toilette from www.theperfumeshop.com. We had difficulty in deciding which fragrance to go for as there were just so many wonderful designer fragrance brands to choose from.

The Perfume Shop is the UK’s largest specialist fragrance retailer with 179 shops nationwide and all fragrances are sold at value for money prices. All staff from The Perfume Shop can help customers make the best perfume choice for themselves or the perfect gift for their loved ones. We were sent an email with all the best fragrance choices for Dad’s so we opted for well known brand Calvin Klein. We thought we would choose something newly launched on the market which was ‘Calvin Klein Eternity Aqua for Men’, this was launched on May 7th. We knew this would go down a treat with Dad as he is a big fan of Calvin Klein and we could be sure that this fragrance wouldn't yet be in his collection.

This particular fragrance is being marketed as a fresh, sophisticated fragrance for modern men; perfect for Dad! We won’t pretend we know much about top notes and base notes but we will tell you that Dad loved it. He can tell you more below. The information on www.theperfumeshop.com tells us that the top notes are chilled cucumber, citrus cocktail and water lotus. The lasting scent is an aquatic woody fragrance as its base notes of sandalwood, patchouli and musk build to create the perfect masculine scent for summer. Prices start at £27.50 for this fragrance.

Dad says: This was a fantastic present! I was really pleased with this one and when my wife told me what price this was available for I was gobsmacked as to how such an amazing fragrance could be available at such a bargain price. I will be certainly checking out www.perfumeshop.com for birthdays and Christmas in the future.

I am very particular about fragrances and anything heavy just puts me right off but this was a light and yet charismatic blend of fragrance that could be worn any time of day with a continuous reminder that there was something delightful in the air. Smell is the sense that is most closely associated with memories and this fragrance will certainly provide a lovely backdrop to Father’s Day memories. It’s the perfect masculine scent for summer!

Father's Day Gift Idea - Day 1

With Father's Day fastly approaching, each day this week we are going to be bringing you some fabulous gift ideas.

Here's our first idea:

Breakfast:

Why not start the morning with something a little different. Mum can be busy preparing Dad a nice cooked breakfast, whilst the kids can feel they are doing their own little bit by making Dad cereal. Not just any cereal though, how about Lucky Charms from www.firebox.com? Anyone remember Lucky Charms? They were available in this country back in the 80’s I believe, but now they are only available in America. So the test was do they taste as good as they did back then?

Lucky Charms are a frosted toasted oat cereal dispersed with colourful marshmallow charms. General Mills, the producer of Lucky Charms have added a further fun factor to this cereal by making the charms ‘swirled.’ These new swirled charms are meant to give Lucky the Leprechaun (the character on the cereal box) an incredible new magic power. Whenever he holds all four charms in his hands, he gains the power to teleport. So needless to say if these are purchased for Dad, then not only will children get the satisfaction of making their Dad breakfast but they even get the delight of trying some of this fantasy cereal themselves. So what was Dad’s opinion?

Dad says: These were not only a visual delight but a treat for the taste buds too. The children were so excited making these for me and I am sure it would make a great start to any Father’s Day. It was great being taken back to my childhood with this nostalgic treat and I already have my eye on another cereal which is available through www.firebox.com for next year, which is called Cap’N Crunch. I’ve never tried that one before but it looks delicious. It’s great that Firebox have managed to locate these cereals for us here in the UK. £8.99 is a little excessive for cereal but they are incredibly rare to find in the UK and the other online stores seem to sell it for around £9.99! It’s a one-off treat and the amount of delight this cereal brought to the whole family certainly certainly made it worth the money. For any of you wanting to be taken down Memory Lane, check out this video of the old Lucky Charms advert http://www.firebox.com/video/2576

We also tried the American Candy which was described by Firebox as: a star spangled selection of chocs and sweeties from the good ol' US of A. Ideal for homesick Americans, curious rest-of-the-worlders and chocoholics looking for any old excuse to order a box of calorific loveliness, this is US choccy at its finest. This was absolutely great and was perfect for the whole family to share whilst watching a great movie. This will really make for a great Father’s Day!
